About Sepsis

What is Sepsis

Sepsis is a condition that occurs when the body over-reacts to serious infection. It is a medical emergency and is life threatening.

Sepsis almost always starts with an infection somewhere in the body. These infections are usally taken care of by the immune system effectively, but sometimes the immune system over-reacts, resulting in sepsis.

When sepsis occurs the immune system releases a flood of chemicals which inadvertently overwhelm the body. If this progresses too far it eventually results in shock and ultimately, if left untreated, or treated too late, leads to organ failure and death.

About Sepsis

Once sepsis has reached septic shock, mortality rates reach 8% hour-on-hour. Until this point, however, sepsis is very difficult to diagnose as it mimics other conditions.

Sepsis is one of the biggest killers in the world and is the cause of 1 in every 5 deaths, globally. Currently, sepsis affects 1.7m Americans and directly kills 270k every year.

The impact of sepsis is even more startling when looking at the 1.43m Americans that survive. Only 50% will make a full recovery, 33% will die within 1 year, and 17% will develop a permanent disability.

At Sepsis Scout, we believe it doesn’t have to be this way. Our technology detects and diagnoses sepsis early so that infections that would have developed into sepsis can be managed before they become serious. We will continue to strive towards our vision of a world free from sepsis.
